Ordinarily I am the mom that prays for a “wind day” when the call from Dare County Schools comes across my phone to announce that they cannot, in good conscience, send the tiny children on the school buses with high coastal winds. I hear my phone and recognize the number right away while pouring myself a glass of something bubbly and listening to the recorded voice on the other side. When the call ends I get to break the news to my teenager who is already asking me if his bes
While we fully recognize and agree that our local Outer Banks restaurants deserve a little winter break, we are sometimes left craving our favorite dishes. When the marquee at Pigman's BBQ lit up on Friday night saying that they were re-opening for two weeks, we were so stoked! You can bet the Krieg family was first in line for Country Ham and sweet potato fries and since my Dad is in town for the holidays we knew he was going to get his fill of ribs and chicken! Penny girl
When my family and I moved here about 8 years ago, we felt like we hit the lottery. My husband and I would walk circles around our small condo after we put our son to bed and we would just look at each other in disbelief. “We live here” was a pretty overused phrase in our home but we were completely smitten with every little detail of our lives. We still are! One thing that we always got so excited about was going out to eat. You see, for years we vacationed here and had our
One of my favorite things about living on the Outer Banks is beach combing with my kids and finding amazing treasures. We have jars and jars of our favorite shells from our local beaches and from our travels near and far. While I prefer to keep our shells lining the steps outside of our home or in small glass jars in our kitchen, the kids always love to create a special craft with their treasures. With the surprise 60 degree day that we were given yesterday I knew that Penny
If you’ve been to any of our great outdoor Outer Banks events this Fall, then you have probably seen the OBX Frozen Yogurt trailer. From the Food Truck Showdown and the 4th Annual Brewtag event, to the Kitty Hawk Elementary School Fall Carnival, FroYo on the Go has been there to supply the sweet treats and keep the little ones and their parents happy! At some of our Outer Banks events, we have noticed that there is a kid-friendly component missing. While the music and enterta
My husband and I have been together since we were 16. In our case, he was my high school sweetheart and I was more like his high school sassy. Being together so long has us so deeply connected. Sometimes, our connection is so in sync that I will be in the middle of texting him and the phone rings, bam! It’s him. Other times he knows exactly what I need … before I even know that I need it. I won’t fail to mention that we are fire on the dance floor because he knows that my mov
I sent out a group text last week asking some of my girlfriends if they wanted to do a “GNO”. You know, a Girls Night Out! Since I roll with a pretty incredible crew, I knew they would be up for it. But when I suggested we go to Chips Wine and Beer in Kill Devil Hills, I got a few perplexed emojis in response because they all thought the same thing. They all thought that Chip’s was just a store! I promised them a great time, and I might be tooting my own horn here, but I deli
It’s not a secret that I didn’t grow up here on the Outer Banks. Like so many, I grew up vacationing here and jumped at the chance to move permanently in 2011 and it felt like moving home. After loving the Outer Banks for 20+ years, I just couldn’t shake the sand from my soul and I somehow convinced my husband to move down from Pittsburgh. Of course, having Barefoot Bernie’s, a local Steelers bar, near our new home sure made it easy to convince him. It’s funny how some things
Ever since our kids were little, especially Joey, they have basically been BBQ connoisseurs. It's funny because it's definitely not something that we cook very often because of how much time it takes to perfectly cook. Luckily for us, we have Pigman's BBQ in Kill Devil Hills!
Our kids are obsessed with their ribs, wings and hushpuppies and they always want to take a bottle of Pigman's famous BBQ sauce home with us! Jason and I initially wanted to try this restaurant out be
We're so excited to announce that Southern Shores Pizza is on the Outer Banks Mom Approved list! I know what you're thinking, obviously a pizza place is kid-friendly, right? I would have to agree but Southern Shores Pizza can check off every single box that makes a restaurant become Outer Banks Mom Approved! Offering so much more than pizza, this restaurant is impeccably clean which is #1 in my book. The minute you walk in the door you feel a warm welcome from the staff and f
It is an honor to share words of wisdom from local pediatric Physicians Assistant, Kellie Flock of Surf Pediatrics. Back to school is right around the corner so special thanks to Kellie for these great tips and reminders!
It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and back to school time is right around the corner. In just one week, we will be trading in beach towels and bathing suits for backpacks and lunch boxes. For some of us this transition is familiar as can be
I've had a lot of questions around here lately after the launch of Outer Banks Mom on our local media outlet, the Outer Banks Voice. Lots of people have been asking me why I am writing over there now when I've been writing right here on my own site for years. Great question!
My hope with this partnership is simple. You see, when I was a first time mom, I was still living at home with my parents and working all of the odd jobs that I could find while I finished school. I wa
We've been buying peaches on repeat for the past few weeks. It seems that non of us can get enough and they are so delish right now! The other day I stopped at Tarheel Too in Kill Devil Hills before lunch. Read: I was hungry! I ended up buying more peaches even though I knew that our fruit bowl at home was filled to the top! Their selection of fresh produce has been amazing this Summer! So when it came time for our Friday Libations, I started thinking about peach cocktails th

When we adopted a local beach access and promised the local SurfRider Foundation that we would keep it clean, we knew we were making a tiny difference on the beach. We didn’t realize that this experience of cleaning up a beach access each week would have such an impact on our family! From the first beach clean that we participated in, we were shocked to see how much we were able to pick up in just a few short minutes. More surprising though was the amount of beach toys that w
When I was a kid we would go on vacation and come home to a full mailbox and a full voicemail on our home phone. It was mostly junk mail and voicemails reminding us about a doctors appointment or a haircut in the upcoming weeks. When I was a teenager and email and cell phones were more accessible, I vividly remember being on the Disney Cruise and trying to check my email for 50 cents per minute just to see if my best friends had emailed me anything "important.” News flash, th
These Frose slushies are perfect for the current heat wave we are experiencing and super easy to make! Believe it or not, there isn't any ice in this recipe! By using frozen watermelon, these are more of a slushie instead of a blended ice drink. First you take two cups of frozen watermelon chunks and a half a cup of frozen raspberries and blend them together. Pour a full bottle of your favorite Rose into the blender. Finally, add a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of lime

Outer Banks Mom Approved. I've been thinking about this for a while now but I've been a little bit selfish. See, I have eaten at just about every single restaurant on the Outer Banks. I've shopped at every single store and I've even bought goldfish at ALL of the fish distributors on this sandbar. Sidenote: I have goldfish that are going on a year old... so, I'm telling you... I have a lot of knowledge in the consumerism department when it comes to the Outer Banks! But I knew
Saturday’s on the Outer Banks are my favorite. Not because they are typically filled with family and friends or because I have a little more time “off” than the other days of the week, though those reasons are great in their own right! But because OBX Saturday’s are CHECK IN DAY!
That means that 120,000+ people are coming to our beaches for a week of hard earned relaxation and priceless memories. I love people watching on the beach as families park their cars because they’re
