I’m sure that I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, but there is a reason for that! Raising children here on this little sliver of sand is truly an amazing gift, much in part to the Children & Youth Partnership for Dare County and all that they do to educate and empower our youth. On Friday, my tiny Lulu and I headed down to Roanoke Island Festival Park for the 12th Annual KidsFest hosted by Children & Youth Partnership, or CYP. She continuously called it “Kid Part

If you read my recent blog about how I am re-implementing self-care into my life then you already know that I have carved out some me time each evening after the kids go to bed. For the past 8 years, I have owned my own business and I always use the evening hours to do a little bit of extra work. At the start of the new year, I started using this evening time to write, exercise, pray and stretch. I’ve been sneaking in deep conditioning treatments and face masks here and there
Last week I was sitting at Waverider's Coffee and Deli in Nags Head. I was waiting to meet a friend for lunch and I took a seat in one of the many sun-drenched seats by the window and scrolled through my Facebook feed. I mindlessly clicked on the “thumbs up” icon while friends shared photos of the waves in Hatteras or snapshots of their children’s handmade Valentine’s Day boxes. I love Facebook for these simple joys. I kept scrolling and I noticed a local man and business own
Ordinarily I am the mom that prays for a “wind day” when the call from Dare County Schools comes across my phone to announce that they cannot, in good conscience, send the tiny children on the school buses with high coastal winds. I hear my phone and recognize the number right away while pouring myself a glass of something bubbly and listening to the recorded voice on the other side. When the call ends I get to break the news to my teenager who is already asking me if his bes
It is an honor to share words of wisdom from local pediatric Physicians Assistant, Kellie Flock of Surf Pediatrics. Back to school is right around the corner so special thanks to Kellie for these great tips and reminders!
It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and back to school time is right around the corner. In just one week, we will be trading in beach towels and bathing suits for backpacks and lunch boxes. For some of us this transition is familiar as can be
It's STILL raining on the Outer Banks and if this if your vacation week, you're likely losing your marbles like those of us that live here. Though the rain is still persisting today and it doesn't make for an ideal family vacation week, you can still create the memories that you were hoping to with your little ones! Of course, you can hit up some of our favorite rainy day activities here on the Outer Banks but if you're still craving the salty Outer Banks air, we have a super
When we adopted a local beach access and promised the local SurfRider Foundation that we would keep it clean, we knew we were making a tiny difference on the beach. We didn’t realize that this experience of cleaning up a beach access each week would have such an impact on our family! From the first beach clean that we participated in, we were shocked to see how much we were able to pick up in just a few short minutes. More surprising though was the amount of beach toys that w
When I was a kid we would go on vacation and come home to a full mailbox and a full voicemail on our home phone. It was mostly junk mail and voicemails reminding us about a doctors appointment or a haircut in the upcoming weeks. When I was a teenager and email and cell phones were more accessible, I vividly remember being on the Disney Cruise and trying to check my email for 50 cents per minute just to see if my best friends had emailed me anything "important.” News flash, th
Saturday’s on the Outer Banks are my favorite. Not because they are typically filled with family and friends or because I have a little more time “off” than the other days of the week, though those reasons are great in their own right! But because OBX Saturday’s are CHECK IN DAY!
That means that 120,000+ people are coming to our beaches for a week of hard earned relaxation and priceless memories. I love people watching on the beach as families park their cars because they’re
Yesterday we had a first look at Jumpmasters Trampoline Park in Manteo. Since the announcement of the business a few months ago, my kids have been so excited! Truth be told, I’ve been super excited too! For me, it’s hard to find something that all of my kids are excited about because with a toddler, a kindergartener and a high-schooler, it’s usually a losing battle to find common ground. With Jumpmasters, we have a winner! I cannot wait to start planning playdates at the tram
We’re carrying on "The Week of the Dad" here on the Outer Banks! I don’t know about you but sometimes it is so hard to think of a great gift for my husband for Father's Day. I can come up with tons of good ideas but I am always looking for a gift that is going to keep on giving and this year I found the PERFECT thing, a brand new Nags Head Hammock! Recently we put a deck onto the back of our home and we are absolutely loving the outdoor space. We anticipated buying deck furni
When you live where people vacation, it’s hard to break away and actually take a vacation for yourself. We are so blessed to have beautiful beaches, warm waves and an abundance of sunshine to enjoy each and every day. But like any place, your day to day life seems to take over and the stress builds up and taking a vacation from vacationland is so needed. Here on the Outer Banks we have beaches to the North that are absolutely breathtaking and beaches to the South that make yo
Have you ever heard someone say that there isn’t anything to do on the Outer Banks? I hear it all the time, people get bored here! It’s kind of mind boggling to me because we truly have so much to do that sometimes I don’t know how we will fit it all in. Jason and I have recently been discussing just how amazing life on the Outer Banks is and how we need to sneak in more date nights to enjoy it all! So, I present to you the first page of our Summer series: Date Like You’re on
We’re gearing up for our annual Ocracoke Island camping trip. Last year, we had the brilliant idea to take our 5 month old baby, our 5 month old puppy and head to Ocracoke to camp with the rest of the family. To put it lightly, it was a nightmare. We’re learning from our big mistakes and hoping that this year is a great time! Our first mistake was that we decided to tent camp. We had two teenage boys and a toddler with us and they didn’t quite grasp the concept of zipping the
We’re keeping this series rolling with day 3 of our Outer Banks Mom Spotlight! If you don’t already know her, then please allow me to introduce Heather Sakers! After our home-buying and HGTV experience, I developed a serious obsession with real estate. When I first met Heather Sakers, an incredibly successful Outer Banks real-estate agent, I started asking her questions and I haven’t stopped trying to obtain some of her knowledge since. Heather has been energetically making
We’re celebrating the incredible Mom’s here on the Outer Banks and day two of our Outer Banks Mom Spotlight series is shining on the beautiful and incredibly intelligent Cori Riddle! The Outer Banks community was fortunate enough to have Cori make Southern Shores her home in 1998 and over the past 20 years she has truly blessed this community with her big heart and willingness to help others! When her youngest was still just a toddler she served on the board for the Dare Coun
When I first moved to the Outer Banks, I knew that I had arrived in paradise. I knew that it was a beautiful place geographically but I didn’t have any idea of the incredible beauty that was within the community. As the years have gone by, I have made incredible friends that have taught me lessons of love and the value of a community. The Outer Banks is home to some incredible people and I am blown away by the beautiful beach-mamas that I am fortunate to do life with here on
Distant thunderstorms late last night and the steady light-rain means that our family all slept great last night and we're up early and heading out to the 11th annual KidFest on Roanoke Island this morning. This is one of our favorite activities so if you're looking for something awesome to do this morning, make sure to head down to Festival Park and enjoy this FREE event with us, put on by the Children & Youth Partnership for Dare County.
Yesterday I overheard a conversati
